D.1 What was tested
| Area | Method | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Crawl | Chromium browser; server HTML and rendered DOM (the page structure) saved for every HTML page (1,083 of 1,125 URLs; the rest are downloads and non-HTML files); 3 parallel requests at most | 1,125 URLs on 5 sites (7 host names, counting apex forms); seeds (starting URLs) were all sitemap URLs, all deck-list URLs on the crawled hosts, and every link found (with a cap on query-string variants per page path) |
| Hub pagination | Browser clicked every page button on 4 hubs | 27 + 3 + 4 + 5 pages (The Stack, blog, research reports, market commentary) |
| Links | Links in the server HTML and in the rendered page; JavaScript-off browser check | 51,522 in server HTML and 57,613 in the rendered page (internal links, page to page) |
| Redirects | Browser recorded every redirect step and status code | 1,952 URLs |
| Historic URLs | Internet Archive index (2023 to 2025, status 200), replayed | 635 page paths, 738 PDFs (all on www) |
| Deck issue lists | Script check of each row against the crawl | 1,503 rows in 7 files |
| Sitemaps and robots.txt | Every sitemap and child sitemap (listed by a sitemap index) on every host (events.grayscale.com returned a bot challenge) | 449 sitemap rows |
| Content | Every indexable page read in full; each quote checked by script against the page text | 499 pages |
| Consent and tracking | Browser trace before and after Allow all (the banner's accept button), and after a full decline | Accept trace: www home and etfs /gbtc; full decline: www home, and 3 runs on etfs /gbtc and etfs home |
| Speed | Lighthouse 13.6, mobile and desktop, 3 runs each | 15 templates (page designs shared by many pages) |
| Accessibility | axe-core 4.10 (accessibility checker) at 390 px and 1440 px | 15 templates |
| AI readiness | GEO Optimizer, an open-source citability scorer (rates how easily AI tools can quote a page) on the saved server HTML | 15 templates |
| Outbound links | a header-only request (status only, no page body) first, then a full request for errors | 3,013 unique URLs (X and Facebook share buttons left out) |
| DNS (domain records), TLS (site encryption), headers | DNS and certificate lookups; response headers from the crawl | 3 domains, 6 hosts |
| Search data | Third-party data provider, US market | Domain overview, ranked keywords, 2 SERP captures (search results pages) of 10 terms, top 100 results each, keyword metrics, backlinks |
D.2 Definitions
- Indexable page: status 200 (page loads), no redirect, no noindex in the robots meta tag or header (a setting that asks search engines not to list the page), no query string (no ?-part in the address).
- Orphan: an indexable page that no crawled page answering 200 links to, in the server HTML or the rendered page.
- JS-only page: an indexable page whose links from other pages appear only in the rendered page, never in the server HTML.
- Rank: organic position (unpaid results, not ads), counted over organic results only. Google redirect links (google.com/goto) were resolved to their targets first. On desktop, all links resolved. On mobile, 7 "bitcoin etf" links did not resolve.
- Speed figures are lab data from one machine. Scores vary between runs, so the report gives ranges and medians.
D.3 Limits
- No Search Console, GA4 (Google Analytics 4) or GA360 (the paid Google Analytics tier) access. All traffic and keyword figures are modelled third-party data.
- No crawler user-agent tests (the identity string a crawler sends) were run, by agreement. The effect of the firewall on each AI crawler needs the firewall logs.
- events.grayscale.com blocked every test request with a bot challenge, including a real browser. Its content was not checked.
- Content behind logins (Institute classes, slate.grayscale.com) was not tested; only the status of their entry pages was recorded.
- A second crawler (a standard HTTP crawler with browser rendering on demand) fetched only 39 Institute pages (102 of its 150 requests were challenged) and no etfs page (429 at the first request), so page counts rest on the browser crawl and the sitemaps.
- The www host blocked the test browser for about 10 minutes after about 3,077 requests. The crawl had finished before the block. The www speed runs were repeated afterwards, and the www soft-404 test was repeated with fresh URLs.
- Content verdicts were written in batches against a fixed scoring guide and a quote check. Counts marked LIKELY rest on reading judgment, not on a script.
- The deck's Semrush, Ahrefs and AI-dashboard figures were not re-measured with those tools. This report's third-party figures come from a different provider, so they cannot show a change from the deck.
D.4 Google documentation rules used
- G-1 "Does the content provide original information, reporting, research, or analysis?"

About this report
This report covers the Grayscale web estate for SEO and GEO (visibility in AI answers): www.grayscale.com, etfs.grayscale.com, research.grayscale.com, institute.grayscale.com, the ZCSH site www.thezcashetf.com, and two staging hosts (pre-release, status checks only). A real browser crawled 1,125 URLs and read the server HTML and the rendered page of each of the 1,083 HTML pages. It also checks every row of the seven issue lists that came with deck v1.1, and each technical claim in that deck. It is written for the Grayscale digital team and for the agency team that runs phase one.
